St. Augustine is a city overflowing with history, from the nation's oldest house to the many intriguing destinations found along historic St._George_Street, the Spanish Military Hospital Museum to the oldest wooden schoolhouse in the USA, and many other "first" and "oldest" found throughout the city. When visiting St. Augustine, people find it easy to quickly become enamored with the cobblestone streets, quaint cafes, and Spanish architecture buildings that highlight America's oldest city.
Perhaps the most troublesome thing about visiting the "Ancient City" is deciding which of the seemingly countless area attractions to explore first. Many start with Fort Matanzas, as it is located just over the bridge and seems to patrol all entry from the south to the area. Dating back to 1740, this masonry watchtower fort was built by the Spanish settlers that discovered the land and offers tours within the massive walls. A simple trip around the perimeter that offers waterfront views and up-close encounters with ancient cannons is sufficient for some. You decide what best suits your curiosity.
Just past the towering fort lies the Gates to the City. Once you've passed through them you will then be among many of the nation's first establishments. Stroll down St. George's cobblestone street and try to take in all the history that surrounds you. Although most of the shops that line the street now are more tourist geared, a short venture down the many side streets will reveal some true St. Augustine flair. Expect to be treated to the music of many live musicians, as their sounds often carry out from the open doors and windows of the many venues that feature such performances. The best part about it - it's strictly a pedestrian street! No rushing here!
When taking in the beautiful scenery that St. Augustine is known for, you will notice the abundance of Spanish architecture, immaculate gardens, and the plethora of ancient statues and monuments. Many of these date back to the early settlement days and the rest were not far behind. Take a second to appreciate the intricate works and aesthetic appeal of all that is St. Augustine as you continue your afternoon stroll.
Upon further exploration of the city, you will find the Nation's Oldest House. Narrated tours are offered and will helpfully explain what is original and what has been added, in addition to pointing out significant Spanish, British, and American influences.
Another historic landmark is the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse in the USA, one of three structures in St. Augustine that dates back more than two centuries ago. You won't miss this spectacle found right off of St. George's street, as the red-cedar-and-cypress building still stands tall, held together by wooden pegs and handmade nails. Venture inside to find the ancient classroom occupied by make-believe pupils and teacher, a dunce seated in the corner, and a below-stairs dungeon for those particularly unruly children.
All this sightseeing is sure to work up quite an appetite, so hopefully you've been taking note of all the enticing eateries you've been passing by during your travels. Just like any other popular destination, there are seemingly countless choices of restaurants of all cuisines here in St. Augustine. Naturally, being a waterfront town, the seafood is fabulously fresh and well stocked at the many seafood shacks and restaurants that are scattered about the city. Several old-fashioned, fine-dining establishments also populate St. Augustine's streets, and the elaborately adorned dining rooms will make you feel as if you've traveled back in time to an ancient town in its prime! Be sure to try the Mill Top Tavern for a memorable meal in an amazing atmosphere. Climb the stairs to the second floor for great eats, live music, and professional service in a 19th century mill that is listed in the historical record. You won't be Shopping is one of the most favorite pastimes of tourists, whether they are searching for souvenirs for themselves or for loved ones, and St. Augustine has what seems like infinite stores and shops for those one-of-a-kind reminders of your new favorite vacation! St. George street is the most densely populated area for tourist shops, but they are scattered throughout the rest of the town as well.
Many towns across America have been deemed "haunted", and St. Augustine is always at the top of the list for paranormal activity. Being piled high with original buildings and establishments, ancient forts, and centuries-old cemeteries, it's no wonder that many people claim to have experienced "ghosts", "hauntings", and other scary activities. Like any good tourist trap, St. Augustine has capitalized on this in a fashion that benefits both the town and the visitors by embracing their history and offering many tours of haunted buildings and places. Ghost Tours of St. Augustine offers walking, riding, and even sailing tours of the cities most feared destinations. Be prepared, very few have been disappointed when pointed in the right direction here.
Beaches and water activities, historic sites and museums, beautifully breathtaking churches and Spanish architecture buildings, parks, tours (both daily and nightly for the extra brave), original shopping venues, and top-quality restaurants can all be found in America's first city. Schedule your trip and see for yourself the history and alluring appeal of St. Augustine that everyone is talking about.
